Creating a sense of calm in your home

Between work, family life and socialising, life gets pretty busy, which is why it’s important your home serves as an oasis you can retreat to.

But how do you create a sense of calm, where your home is a haven from the outside world that you can relax in, unwind, and enjoy the serenity?

Here’s are seven ways to create a sense of calm in your home…

Clear out the clutter

As hard as it is to part with items of emotional significance, clutter can elicit a sense of stress.

It can also quickly overwhelm a room and be an impediment to keeping your house clean.

Where possible, clear out the clutter by paring down the items you have on display to just a couple of pieces of importance.

The rest can be relinquished or, if it has real emotional value to you, placed in storage and alternated with items on display when you feel like it.

Consider the room’s role

Almost every room in a home serves a role and it’s important to consider this as you set about creating warm and inviting spaces to relax in.

For example, the bedroom should be an oasis of calm that is free of electronics and has a look and feel that invites you in to relax and rejuvenate.

If you’re considering refreshing your bedroom, consider adding pieces such as plush cushions, a nice throw or perhaps a floor rug to provide that resort-like feel.

It’s similar in spaces like the bathroom which can be revamped with quality towels, candles and aromatherapy.

Meanwhile, even a study area can be transformed into a calming space with the addition of a reading chair, some nice lighting, a couple of decorator pieces that you have in display, and good storage to ensure there’s minimal clutter or paperwork on show.

Embrace colour

Colour elicits emotions and feelings, meaning it plays a huge role in how we feel in the home.

This colour can be added in large ways and small including feature walls, soft furnishings, cushions, artwork and more.

However, the aim is to create a scheme that lifts the mood and brings you a sense of serenity.

Go natural

Natural fibres and textures create a connection with nature, which is why they make an ideal addition if you’re seeking to create a home that is an oasis.

Consider the textures and fibres used in your home in terms of furniture, soft furnishings and even feature pieces.

As you do this turn you attention to their colour and tone, are they light and welcoming, or dark statement pieces?

The base colour palette and style of your home will determine which colours and tones are most likely to elicit that sense of calm.

Harness natural light

Natural light brings the outdoors in, creating a sense of calm and a connection to nature around us.

You can tap into this by using window furnishings that allow natural light in.

Alternatively, if natural light is in short supply, consider introducing strategically placed mirrors and a light colour palette which reflects the natural light available.

The power of plants

Plants also connect us with the calming feeling of nature, making them a must-have addition when it comes to creating a feeling of peace and tranquility in the home.

Carefully select a variety of indoor plants and use them as feature pieces in appropriate places that might include the living areas, bathroom, bedroom and more.

Indulge the senses

When it comes to interior design, there’s a tendency to concentrate on just what we see, but in truth it should be multi-sensory, tapping into the sense of smell, touch and sound.

If you’re seeking to elicit a sense of calm in the home, indulge the senses with scent, texture, music and beautiful furniture along with items that genuinely bring you comfort and joy.
