This handmade Mali Mudcloth Cushion – Mustard 60×60 / Euro Size, is newly made in the same traditional method that mudcloth has been made for over 1000years. This cushion comes in a vibrant mustard tone and includes a high quality feather insert.
Made by artisans of Mali, traditionally a base fabric is handwoven into long strips then sewn together to form a larger single piece if fabric. This piece of larger fabric is then dyed using tecniques involving water that’s been coloured by using leaves, tanin from wood and mud. The mud is applied to create a barrier from the dye and when submerged in the water, the dye transferance is only left on the raw fabric and once the mud is removed, you are left with symbols and shapes that tell the story the artisan is seeking to convey.
This process is lengthy and can involve many drying and dying processes, however modern techniques allow for faster processes, but the natural earth dyes remain the same.
DETAILS: Made from handwoven and dyed cotton, with a plain back that includes a center mounted zip.
SIZE Approximately 60x60cm
NOTE: This cushion is sold including a high quality “feather” insert.
Characteristics of being handmade, include colour overdyeing, textile anomalies and minor repairs.
CARE: Cold wash in a delicates bag, however some colour loss may occur due to the vegetable dyes, which have not been chemically set. Therefore drycleaning is the preferred method of cleaning, to avoid colour loss.
